The ZBoard – Electric Skateboard Awesomeness Coming to a Boardwalk Near You

YES! YES! YES!

Earlier this month, the ZBoard got all the funding they needed on start-up funding site Kickstarter. What’s that mean? The project’s a-go, mo-fo’s!

Haven’t heard of the ZBoard? Well it’s a good thing this blog isn’t only about portable speakers. Here’s the skinny:

The Zboard is a weight-sensing electric skateboard. All you do is lean forward to move forward and lean back to stop: front and rear foot pads evaluate how much force you’re applying and send the information to the on-board micro-controller to dictate the speed of the electric motor.

Pretty simple, right? Cool, let’s move on.

The ZBoard comes with off-road wheels and a built-in handle. It ships with a wall charger, so you can charge it wherever you go.

There are two ZBoards: the Classic and the Pro:

The Classic goes 15+MPH. It lasts for about five miles and takes five hours to charge. The motor is a 400W electric motor and the battery is sealed lead acid (SLA). The board stretches a good 40 inches, its width is 9.5 inches, and it weighs 37 lbs.

The Pro on the other hand gets over 17MPH. It lasts for about 10 miles and takes five hours to charge, too. The Pro also comes with a 400W electric motor, but this model comes with a lithium ion phosphate battery. As a result, the thing weighs a lot less – just 30 lbs total. The other two specs are the same, though: 40 inches long and 9.5 inches in width.

The one caveat with the whole thing is that you can’t do tricks with the ZBoard. I mean, with the Classic costing $499 and the Pro priced at $749, would you honestly take this thing off a ramp?

Me thinks not.

The whole idea for this awesome contraption came to the ZBoard team while trying to come up with a senior project at the University of Southern California. They were tired of bikes getting stolen and having to push skateboards up hills and over LA’s uneven streets. The result was an idea for a device that is faster and easier to ride than a skateboard, and more fun and portable than a bike.

I’d say they nailed it. Do you?
