VOTE: Who has the better start-up idea?

Check out these two music-based Kickstarter campaigns: which one do you think is better?

Okay, so here’s the deal: the Boombotix family has two friends who have Kickstarter campaigns live on the site right now. While they’re vastly different in concept, their common ground is the fact that both are built around the guitar.

Being that our audience is pretty friggen music savvy, what with the fact that they’re reading the blog for the most badass and best portable speakers in the universe, we’re interested in finding out what YOU think of these two ideas.

Check out the details on both campaigns and let us know which one you think is the better idea (don’t worry, feelings WILL be hurt here and grudges are likely to be set once the results start to come in from the vote). Details on both campaigns are after the jump and at the end, let us know in the comment section which one you think is better.

Oh, and by the way, if you go to the Kickstarter site for either / or, please try not to be swayed by the success of one over the other (one is doing considerably better than the other right now . . . by, like, a lot. A real lot.)

So, here we go: The Unlimited Electric Guitar vs. gTar.

The Unlimited Electric Guitar

Unlimited Electric Guitar

Basics:
An electric guitar with all the functionality of amps and effect pedals, but none of the physical components.

Breakthrough idea:
Uses smartphone technology for effects pedals, and the guitar includes a built-in amplifier and speaker.

Why:
We all don’t have roadies; with this nifty-ass concept, you can rock out wherever you are without having to lug 1,000 pounds of gear with you.

Specs worth noting:
• Maple neck with 25 1/2″ scale and 20 frets.
• Three-way switch to select between different configurations of the two single coil pickups.
• Volume control knob
• Gain control knob
• Rechargeable lithium ion battery that supplies up to 40 hours of playing time per charge. The battery charges by plugging into any standard wall outlet (charger included).
• 1/4″ audio jack to output to an amplifier or directly to a PA.
• 1/8″ audio jack to connect to iPhone or output to headphones

Anything else worth noting?
The iPhone app is FREE and it lets you add, edit, and combine digital effects. All you have to do is plug it into your iPhone and turn on the app. Yes, it really is that simple.

gTar

Basics:
The gTar’s a digital guitar that teaches you how to play, regardless of experience.

Breakthrough idea:
The guitar itself doesn’t have pickups to amplify the sound. Instead, it has sensors that tell you where to place your fingers and then detects exactly what you’re playing in real time. It then relays the notes being played to your iPhone (resting in the face of the guitar) and the phone produces sound through the gTar app. It’s like Guitar Hero, but for real life.

Why:
Not everyone knows how to play the guitar, but a lot of us want to learn. gTar helps us do this without the hassle of spending money / months taking lessons or sacrificing tons of hours watching some 54-year-old who still lives in his mother’s basement and clearly does not go upstairs to shower teach us on how to play on YouTube.

Specs worth noting:
• Size: 35″L x 13″ W x 1.75″ D
• Connections: USB, 1/4″ Line Out, SmartPick
• Power: Internal 5000 mAh Li-Ion Battery, Charging via. USB
• App + gTar Compatibility: iPhone 4/4S (app + gTar)
• gTar Hardware Compatibility: Any CoreMIDI/USB-MIDI enabled device (includes other devices running iOS 5, Android, and Mac OSX)

Anything else worth noting?
There are three levels of difficulty: easy, where you learn to play open strings; medium, where you play frets and strings at the same time; and difficult, where the gTar will show you the correct notes, but allow you to play whatever (the fuck) you want because really, at this point in the game, you’re a mother fucking rock star.

The gTar app is constantly updated with new songs for you to learn how to play. I, personally, have not checked out yet, so I’m not sure if they have anything by Justin Bieber in there.

With the order, you get a padded backpack gig bag, guitar strap, USB charger (1A 5V), USB cable, two sets of replacement strings, three smartpicks, and a line-out headphone adapter.
