What is TRAP Music?

Everyone is talking about it but what is Trap music?  It isn’t really anything we haven’t heard.  I would say that Trap is just trying to put a new name on rap artists using an unconventionally high use of synth.  Rap is no stranger to bass, but the modulating bass we see in Dub and Future Bass is a bit fresh.  Trap is gangsta.  It’s repetitive.  It’s awesome and it is here to stay.

Urban Dictionary offers one strong definition of Trap music:

Trap music is based on use of the 808 Roland drum machine, pitched and re-sampled hiphop/rap vocals, pipe flutes, gangsta synth leads, and various FX. Similar to rap without the main vocal, Trap music has been gaining lots of attention from major DJ’s and labels. Although, the style originated many years ago, Trap music has recently been making a new school comeback in many new forms such as “Trap”, “Chirp”, “SeaPunk”, “PsyTrap”, and “TrapStep”. Earliest known examples can be found by artists such as Triple Six Mafia, UGK, Swisha House, and Gucci Mane. Tempos range widely from 135-175bpm which is uncommon for most major genres of electronic dance music (EDM).

This is what trap music is now

You know it’s hit the mass market when Lil’ Wayne and TI do a track claiming the TRAP music.  It’s ok.  Trap was trending so hard it had no where to go.  To be quite honest, Ball is actually a pretty sick song.  I heard it a 5:50am when I was moving the van for street cleaning and it not only awoke me… it made me feel… ballin’!?

Another fine example is one of Riff Raff’s recent pieces.

Brrrrr!!! Gucci Mane and Kreayshawn Sidekick V-Nasty Announce Joint Album

Gucci Mane and Kreayshawn Sidekick V-Nasty Announce Joint Album

If ANYTHING, this is debatably one of the more marketable hip-hop/rap album releases we’ve seen this year.  Kreayshawn is FOR REAL now.

UPDATE: This collaboration is the first piece of a partnership between Vice Music andWarner Bros. The partnership will include three years of collaboration on music distribution, marketing, touring support and more.

Even if you happened to run a popular rap fan fiction blog, you couldn’t dream something like this up. Brick Squad king Gucci Mane and Kreayshawn‘s controversial sidekick V-Nastyhave teamed up for an entire album, according to Gucci’s website. It’s called BAYTL and drops on December 13 through Warner Bros. Now you know what you’re buying Nana for Christmas.

I was thinking up so many crazy things the acronym BAYTL could stand for, before I realized it’s probably just a combination of Bay (for Bay Area, where V-Nasty’s from) and ATL (for Gucci’s hometown of Atlanta). The tracklist, which includes features from Mistah F.A.B. and Slim Dunkin, is below, followed by the lyric video for the opening track “Whip Appeal”:
